Description
This position supervises and participates in the work of personnel engaged in the maintenance and programs of the Aquatic Center.
This position may be required to work regularly during the weekends, holidays, nights and during inclement weather.
Examples of Duties
- Supervises and coordinates the work of lifeguards; develops a comprehensive training program for lifeguard staff.
- Develops and updates comprehensive training manual for lifeguard staff.
- Maintains all health and safety equipment, supplies and inventory in good working order; reviews, develops, and executes training on cleanliness methods and standards.
- Coordinates the swim lesson and water exercise program; serves as main instructor for swimming lessons; assists in the development of swim lesson curriculum.
- Monitors swimming area to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and to respond to emergency events; performs lifeguarding duties.
- Manages open swim programs and activities.
- Provides in-service training for all instructors; leads American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses.
- Supervises and participates in facility cleaning and maintenance.
- Manages the set-up, safety protocols, staffing, and break-down for special events.
- Monitors pool chemistry and makes adjustments as required.
- Performs the duties of a Lifeguard as needed.
- Assists in the operations of the ticket office.
- Assigns, directs, schedules, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
- Assists in the recruitment of lifeguards and swim instructors.
Typical Qualifications
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification, Lifeguarding certification, and First Aid/CPR certification. Lifeguard Instructor Trainer preferred.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Aquatics Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include Red Cross guidelines, Health Department requirements, safety standards, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related specialized and supervisory duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to perform specialized duties in support of aquatics programs and events. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of aquatic programming.

- Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, vendors, contractors, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizing the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an aquatic facility and/or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
