Earlier today, Boston FD (Local 718) Firefighters were involved in a critical incident while responding to a confirmed building fire at an apartment complex in Boston. During the course of that fire, their Firefighters were confronted by gunfire within the building.
Boston Local 718 leadership commends the swift and professional response of their Members under extreme and dangerous conditions. As Firefighters, we knowingly accept the risks involved in our profession and we embrace these dangers on behalf of the citizens and the city we serve. However, Firefighters being faced with this level of violence and this brand of danger is entirely unacceptable.
Today’s incident not only highlights the service that their Members provide to the City of Boston on a daily basis but also the ever-changing dangers Firefighters face in the performance of their duties.
BFD’s Local 718 leaders commend the rapid response of our Brothers & Sisters of the Boston Police Department and Boston Emergency Medical Services and look forward to the results of a thorough investigation into the matter and demand that anyone found to have threatened the safety and lives of their Members be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.
