Buffalo (NY) Engine 2 Firefighter Jason Arno, 37, with 3 years on the job, was killed in the Line of Duty Wednesday after a smoke/fire related explosion trapped him inside a large commercial building. He is a father, husband, son and friend, as posted by BFD FFs Local 282.
Reports are that he was about 30 feet inside the burning building around 1000 hours when a partial collapse set off by a backdraft and trapped him, according to Fire Commissioner William Renaldo.
Firefighters were forced to delay rescue attempts when an evacuation was called just before and following the smoke explosion. “Unfortunately, they weren’t able to retrieve him at the time,” Renaldo said, adding that the exact cause of death is unknown at this time.
It took hours for the department to reach FF Arno to retrieve his body due to the severely unstable structure.
