    The South Walton Fire District is currently seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Chief Support Services, a highly responsible managerial, professional and administrative position assisting the Fire Chief. Responsibilities include supervision of the Support Services elements of the Fire District, under the direction of the Fire Chief.

    Major Duties:
    • Oversees and directs the preparation, presentation and tracking of capital and operating budgets within his/her command. Maintains oversight and regulation of expenditures and requisitions needed by divisions. Advises and directs division heads and subordinates concerning program costs and projected operational modification cost estimates. Directs and oversees development of periodic reports and collections, consumption analysis and related activities of the office.
      • Directs development of policies and procedures dealing with operational or maintenance matters, facility safety, etc.
      • Assists the Fire Chief in the development of annual and long-range revenue and expenditure projections of the District. Monitors all budget changes and updates budget records accordingly.
    • May function as department head in the absence of the Fire Chief.
    • Assists Fire Chief with the development of short and long-range goals and objectives and strategic planning of Fire District initiatives.


    Knowledge and Skills Required for the Position:

    • Extensive knowledge and skills associated with program management. Ability to manage various sizes of projects, programs and tasks. Abilities will include the creation of concepts for projects, ability to communicate the concepts with anticipated timelines and costs to the District. Ability to properly procure the funds, equipment, materials and personnel for the project, program or task. Ability to manage and implement the project, program or task through a successful completion.
    • Extensive knowledge in the modern methods of emergency services and the use and maintenance of rescue equipment within the Fire District.
    • Ability to effectively and efficiently plan, assign, supervise, evaluate, and direct assigned personnel.
    • Ability to regulate and control fleet services, information technology, public safety communications, facility, and training expenditures and equipment.
    • Extensive knowledge of fire service standards and regulations.
    • Knowledge of technology infrastructure and software. To include, but not limited to Server infrastructure, networking, cloud infrastructure, database systems, computer infrastructure along with a variety of program awareness. Able to evaluate existing programs and infrastructure, evaluate new technology trends, oversee technology projects with this knowledge, skills and abilities.
    • Prepare and complete accurate accounting/financial analysis and reports of a complex nature. Analyze and evaluate divisions budget and to develop pertinent and related data. Develop an efficient plan to meet the short and long term facility, fleet, communications, technology requirements of the District.
    • Assist, initiate, or support the research and preparation of grant applications, reviews language and makes modifications and redrafts as required. Maintain a pre-compliance and compliance system for District grants.
    • Provide general oversight for capital project implementation. Prepare, present and track capital and operating budgets for the division.
    • May conduct, or direct to be conducted, internal investigations; may coordinate or participate in District/Divisional hearings or operational reviews such as disciplinary, EEO, and tactical critiques; recommends and/or administers discipline within the division.
    • Serves as a member of the Fire Chief’s executive management / leadership staff.
    • Assists the Fire Chief in overseeing labor contract administration activities and administering all elements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
    • May respond and assume command of any emergency or incident to ensure the safe and efficient mitigation of the incident, with emphasis on the safety and well-being of all shift personnel, victims, and the general public.
    • Provide general oversight of all facilities within the District to include general maintenance to major repair/replacement projects.


    Supervisory Controls:
    Reports to the Fire Chief / Administrator.

    Physical Demands:
    Must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and effectively perform emergency scene duties when needed. Requires good vision, good hearing, ability to distinguish odors, ability to walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, jump, and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required. Must be able to climb ladders and stairs to perform or supervise and have working knowledge of the tools and procedures typically used in emergency operations and.

    Work Environment:
    Work is performed primarily inside an office or fire station setting, but some outside work scenes may occur. Outside work is frequently performed in emergency conditions which may often involve extreme danger and exertion under stressful and hazardous conditions such as flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen deficient atmosphere, downed power lines, in and among moving vehicles, and in varying and inclement weather, among others.

    Supervisory and Management Responsibility:
    Supervision of Communications Director, Fleet Director, IT Manager, Training Chief

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Florida Minimum Standards of Firefighting Certification.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
    • Must be a non-smoking/non-tobacco using person, both on and off the job, at the time of employment and maintain same non-smoking and non-use throughout the term of employment.
    • Must successfully pass the Fire District’s medical/physical, drug screen and background check requirements as a condition of employment.
    • Residency of within a 20-mile radius of South Walton Fire District Headquarters is required.
    • Current Florida Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certification
    • Florida Fire Officer 2 Certification
    • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications in IS-100, IS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, IS-700, IS-800, All-Hazards Operations Section Chief (E/L-958) certification or NWCG Equivalent, & ICS All-Hazards Division/Group Supervisor (E/L-960) certification or NWCG Equivalent to be obtained within one year of employment
    • Florida Forestry certification in S130/S190 as Wildland Firefighter, & S330 Strike Team Leader to be obtained within one year of employment.
    • Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field
    • Ten (10) years active experience with a Fire Rescue Department, with five (5) years documented at supervisory and managerial levels.
    • A combination of experience and education may apply
