N.H. FIREFIGHTER DIES FOLLOWING SHIFT

Posted by Tony Thomas - December 17, 2023 7:38 AM

We regret to pass on that Lt. Charles "Chuck" Gallant, a 20-year-veteran of Rye Fire Rescue in New Hampshire (near Portsmouth) died yesterday following an overtime shift. Lt. Gallant was president of Professional Firefighters of Rye IAFF Local 4411 and a recipient of the Paul W. Sypek Medal of Valor.

In 2014 Lt Gallant was awarded the Paul W. Sypek Medal of Valor in honor of his heroism while battling a fire on board aboard the USS Miami submarine at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in May 2012. A flashover came at Gallant's crew four causing fellow Rye firefighter Mike Hirtle to collapse. Gallant refused to leave him behind and help get him up a ladder to safety. The U.S. Senate recognized his heroism with a proclamation that hangs in the town's public safety building.

The award is New Hampshire's highest award; and is given for conspicuous bravery at extreme risk to life, above and beyond the call of duty, in an effort to protect and save a human life.

Our condolences to all those affected. Rest In Peace.
