FDNY Symposium “Lithium Ion Batteries: Challenges for the Fire Service”

Posted by Tony Thomas - July 19, 2022 10:41 AM

In partnership with the FDNY Foundation, UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute and the National Fire Protection Association, FDNY invites you to learn about the technology, associated hazards, and lessons learned from responding to and mitigating these incidents.

On September 6th and 7th, 2022, FDNY will host an “in-person” symposium at the FDNY Fire Academy to review the emerging threat of Li-ion battery fires and the challenges posed in fighting fires involving this technology. Fire severity, rapid fire spread, and atmospheric toxicity combine to pose a growing threat to the public and numerous challenges to firefighting operations. A developing understanding of this hazard and its impact on the fire environment is forcing the FDNY to create “best practices” and modify firefighting operations in real-time. This symposium is intended to serve as a forum for fire service leaders to join us in order to share knowledge on this evolving fire service issue.

The program will focus primarily on self-powered mobility device battery fires. In addition to discussing evolving firefighting and post-fire operational procedures, the conference will examine fire case studies, contemplate ongoing and needed research, and consider fire reporting and legislative concerns. Presentations will be complemented by live fire and operational demonstrations, the review of actual Li-ion equipment, and Li-ion battery cells and modules. Tours of the world-renowned FDNY Fire Academy will be available.
