More than 10 days after that Gresham (OR) Firefighter went into the working duplex fire to search for a teen reported inside, the four-year veteran and married father of two remains in very critical condition. Still intubated at Legacy Emanuel Hospital with burns over 45% of his body, FF Spencer Tejedas has already undergone three surgeries.
On May 31, Tejedas and two other Firefighters entered the burning home to find a teenager with disabilities they were told was inside. After he and his crew entered the duplex, they discovered the teen was already safely outside the home. While inside, there was a reported flashover.
Two of the injured firefighters were treated and released from Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, but Tejedas suffered severe burns on almost half of his body and was moved to the Oregon Burn Center for treatment.
The preliminary information has revealed the fire was caused by an unattended candle and contact with Firefighter Tejedas may have been lost after his radio melted during the fire.
