FIREFIGHTER: Murder-Suicide

Posted by Capt. Lewis - June 17, 2024 7:17 AM

Tragic news from Florida as St. Johns County Fire Chief Sean McGee shared his condolences Saturday after a Lieutenant and his wife were found dead inside their home in what the sheriff’s office called a murder-suicide, leaving 4 young children behind.

SJCFR Lieutenant Shawn Yarbrough, 46, and his wife Andrea Yarbrough, 34, were found shot on Thursday night around 9:20 p.m. in their home. SJSO ruled Andrea Yarbrough’s death as a homicide and Shawn Yarbrough’s death as a suicide.

While it is unclear what led to the shooting, Andrea Yarbrough reposted a message on Facebook from the Fire Rescue on May 1st- the department detailed the number of calls fire rescue has made so far this year. She then commented, “This is why all of our significant others are exhausted and never functioning 100% at home.” In 2022, there were two suicides in the department that year, which led to emergency funding to approve $500,000 in mental health assistance for the department. Our condolences to all those affected by these losses.
