Jose was born and raised here in Oxnard. He attended Tierra Vista, Rose Avenue, and Sierra Linda Elementary Schools, St. John’s Lutheran School, and Oxnard High School. After high school, he attended Oxnard and Ventura Colleges before transferring to San Diego State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration. Jose then continued his education in Australia, earning a Masters of Science in Criminal Justice Administration.
Throughout his years in school, Jose worked as a server in various restaurants, a bar supervisor at a professional Rugby stadium, and a research assistant at S.D.S.U. From an early age, he enjoyed learning about criminal law. Early career aspirations included working for the District Attorney's Office. He was accepted to law school in Australia, but later became fascinated with the practice of Criminal Profiling. He decided to change his focus to Criminology and took a job in law enforcement to get experience with investigations. Sergeant Diaz joined the Oxnard Police Department family in 2010. Since then, he has worked numerous assignments, including: Explorer Advisor, Field Training Officer, Motor Officer, Traffic Unit Coordinator, and he was recently promoted as our new Traffic/Patrol Support Unit Sergeant.
What has been his favorite assignment so far? According to Jose, “I greatly enjoyed being a Field Training Officer because I got to make the first impression on new officers. It was fun motivating the new officers and I was constantly learning trying to find answers to their questions.” What’s his favorite thing about this career? He says, “Definitely seeing a child's excitement of seeing a police officer.
”Today, Jose is celebrating Father’s Day with his wife and three children, ages 6, 4, and 10 months. His favorite things to do on days off are going on adventures with his family and exploring new things that spark their interests. He loves to travel, and has been to over twenty different countries!
